Tumacaori

Founded by Jesuit Father Eusebio Francisco Kino in January 1691, Mission San Cayetano de Tumacácori was the first mission to be located in what is now Arizona, and was part of the global Spanish mission system of colonization that attempted to create a self-sufficient agricultural community, convert local Indians to the Catholic religion, and generate revenue for Spain. Originally located on the east side of the Santa Cruz River, the mission moved, following the Pima Revolt in 1751, to its present location on the west side of the river. The mission was then rechristened San José de Tumacácori.

Gila River Valley

The Gila River Valley is a multi-sectioned valley of the Gila River, mostly in Arizona. The Gila River forms in western New Mexico and flows west across southern-eastern, south-central, and southwestern Arizona; it changes directions across the state, and defines specific areas and valleys. The central portion of the river flows on the southern Phoenix valley region-(where Phoenix, in the Salt River Valley joins the Gila River Valley), and the final sections in southwestern Arizona form agricultural, irrigated smaller valleys within the Gila River valley, (for example Dome Valley, Mohawk Valley, and Hyder Valley).

Two mountain ranges are named for the Gila River: the Gila Mountains (Graham County) bordering the Gila River valley, northeast of Safford; the Gila Mountains (Yuma County) border the Gila River valley before the Gila River joins its confluence with the Colorado River; that range is east of Yuma and the Fortuna Foothills.

South Mountain

At more than 16,000 acres South Mountain Park/Preserve actually consists of three mountain ranges, the Ma Ha Tauk, Gila and Guadalupe; and is one of the largest municipally operated parks in the country. It boasts 51 miles of primary trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels. From the park's main entrance, you can drive up the Summit Road 5.5 miles to Dobbins Lookout and spectacular valleywide views or you can continue to the Gila Lookout for a view of the Gila River Valley.

Sedona Desert

Sedona is located at the lower end of Arizona's spectacular Oak Creek Canyon, renowned for its stunning red buttes and monoliths, as well as its surrounding lush forests. Sedona is located in both Coconino and Yavapai Counties and is completely surrounded by the Coconino National Forest.

Sedona has become a center for traditional and contemporary arts and offers a variety of galleries, boutiques and specialty shops. It is an upscale retirement and tourism community, because it is the jumping off place for tours of the Red Rocks region.
